New Helmholtz Institute at the Greifswald Science Location

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research establishes a joint institute for molecular infection research with the University of Greifswald.

Last week, the Budget Committee of the Lower House of the German Parliament (Bundestag) decided to provide 40 million euros in funding for the establishment of a possible new Helmholtz Institute in Greifswald, spread over the next five years and subject to the participation of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A branch of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) will be established at the University of Greifswald, mainly focusing on molecular infection research.

The HZI welcomes the decision of the Bundestag to strengthen infection research and to incorporate the Greifswald site into the HZI.

"This shows the great recognition of the HZI's scientific expertise in the research of infectious diseases and in the development of new active substances and therapies," said Prof Dirk Heinz, Scientific Director of the HZI. "We also have many years of experience in establishing Helmholtz Institutes with universities - through our Helmholtz Institutes HIPS in Saarbrücken (Pharmaceutical Research) and HIRI in Würzburg (RNA-based Infection Research)."

The considerations regarding the establishment of the possible Helmholtz Institute are currently still at a very early stage. "For this reason, we will soon be discussing the details of the content with the potential partners," said Prof Dirk Heinz. Of course, the establishment of a new Helmholtz Institute will presuppose the usual, science-guided procedure of the Helmholtz Association.
