Microbes, molecules, hands-on activities - the HZI at your fingertips
In the science showcase, the HZI displays a lifelike diorama with myxobacteria - soil bacteria that play an important role as producers of active substances for the development of new drugs, such as antibiotics. Electron microscope images of microorganisms, biofilms and spores provide fascinating insights into the microcosm.
Citizen science projects such as Microbelix and CiFly show how citizens can actively contribute to research into microbial diversity. A virtual tour also gives visitors a glimpse of the HZI campus - including a look inside a high-security laboratory. A real S3 safety suit illustrates how HZI researchers work in these biosafety areas. For children, there are creative activities such as microbe crafting and drawing.
After-work talks
Among the prominent speakers of the Feierabend Talks are Prof. Martin Korte, neurobiologist at the TU Braunschweig and HZI researcher, who is well-known for his work on memory, dementia and neuroimmunology, as well as Dr. Peggy Riese, expert in vaccine research at the HZI, and Dr. Leander Grode from Serum Life Science Europe in Hanover, a spin-off from the HZI, who has many years of experience in the field of biopharmaceutical company start-ups and vaccine development. The program will be complemented by other distinguished scientists such as Dr. Mathias Müsken (electron microscopy), Dr. Hedda Schrey (microbial drugs), Dr. Max Kellner (zoonosis research) and Dr. Daniel Krug and Dr. Selina Deckarm from the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), who are opening up new avenues of research communication with their citizen science project Microbelix. The after-work talks take place from 18:00-19:30, participation is free and possible without registration.

BioS school laboratory: experience life sciences in hands-on experiments
The BioS school laboratory is also opening its doors as part of the Science Showcase. Students from lower and upper secondary schools can apply modern life science methods themselves in BioS - from microbiological examinations to DNA analyses. The program in the science showcase is open to school groups of all school types and is designed for grades 7-9.
For school groups of up to 12 people who would like to take part in the BioS school laboratory program, please register at:
Registration for schools (in German)
Important note
The events will not take place on the Science Campus Braunschweig-Süd in Stöckheim.
