Are you interested in learning how to use Linux and automate bioinformatics workflows from the command line?

The department “Computational Biology for Infection Research” at HZI, is pleased to announce the next DZIF and NFDI4Microbiota bioinformatics workshop titled “Linux basics and scripting for bioinformatics”, to be held from 11–13 November 2026 at the BRICS building in Braunschweig. It is aimed at biologists, physicians, and other researchers who would like to build practical computing skills for working with bioinformatics software and data.

Topics include:

  • Linux fundamentals and the file system
  • Running programs from the command line
  • Shell scripting, pipelines, permissions, and software installation
  • A practical bioinformatics exercise
  • Using the Slurm job scheduler in the HZI computing environment
  • Discussion of participants’ own bioinformatics questions, as time allows

No previous Linux experience is required. The course will be taught in English, and all participants will receive the course materials and a certificate of attendance. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop, although this is not mandatory.
