Sites of the Helmholtz Centre

The Sites of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research are distributed all over Germany. In addition to the main campus in Braunschweig, there are facilities in 4 other cities: Hamburg, Hanover, Saarbrücken and Würzburg.

Campus Braunschweig

The HZI headquarter is located in Braunschweig where it was founded in 1965. The majority of the over 900 employees in Braunschweig are researchers, but management, administration and staff units are also hosted here.

Branch Saarbrücken

Since 2009 the HZI has a branch in Saarbrücken: the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) with its research on natural products, their chemical optimisation and investigation of biological barriers.

Study Centre Hannover

At the HZI Study Centre in Hanover, long-term population studies with voluntary probands will be conducted in the near future. The results are supposed to shed new light on chronic diseases such as cancer or dementia.

Twincore Hannover

The Twincore in Hannover has been founded jointly by the HZI and the Hanover Medical School (MHH). At Twincore medical personnel and basic research scientists from various disciplines conduct infection research side by side. The focus is upon translational research, the interface between basic research and clinical development.

Centre for Structural Systems Biology

In a globalised world infection research plays a major role. Worldwide exchange of goods and long-distance journeys support pathogens to spread easily. Thus, new approaches to fight diseases and infections are absolutly necessary. The research at the Centre for Structural Systems Biology at the DESY Campus in Hamburg is focused on these approaches.

Braunschweig Integrated Centre of Systems Biology

BRICS is a joint research centre of the Technische Universität Braunschweig and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research. Simultaneously, BRICS is a Carolo-Wilhelmina-Centre of the TU Braunschweig. BRICS brings together biologists, chemists, physicists, mathematicians, engineers and computer scientists for interdisciplinary research in the field of systems biology.

Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research

The Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research - or "HIRI" for short – is a joint research centre of the Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg (JMU) and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI). The focus of the Institute is on so-called ribonucleic acids (RNAs).

Centre for Individualised Infection Medicine

The vision of the Centre for Individualised Infection Medicine (CIIM) is to individualise the management of infectious diseases. CIIM is a joint venture of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) and the Hannover Medical School (MHH) and was founded as an initially virtual network under the direction of Professor Michael P. Manns in 2015.

Helmholtz Institute Greifswald

The Helmholtz Institute in Greifswald is being established as a branch of HZI in Braunschweig and will be closely linked to the University of Greifswald, the University Medicine Greifswald and the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut through a scientific cooperation agreement.
The new institute will follow a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to tackle health challenges arising from infectious diseases in line with the “One Health“ concept. The “One Health” Concept acknowledges that human health is tightly connected to the health of animals and an intact environment.
