“With great sadness, we bid farewell to Michael Manns, an extraordinary physician, scientist, and companion. As a member of the supervisory boards of HZI and TWINCORE, as well as the Founding Director of CiiM, he profoundly shaped and guided the development of our institutions. His strategic foresight, tireless support, and passion for fostering young talent deeply enriched the HZI and our partner institutions. Michael Manns not only built structures but also inspired people and guided generations of researchers on their paths. His legacy will continue to accompany and guide us,” says Prof. Josef Penninger, Scientific Director of the HZI. “On behalf of the entire HZI, I extend our deepest condolences to his family and close confidants.”
From 1991 to 2020, Michael P. Manns was Director of the MHH Clinic for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology, focusing on liver diseases, particularly viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases, hepatocellular carcinomas, transplant medicine, and regenerative medicine. In October 2015, he also took on the role of Clinical Director at the HZI, which was newly created at the time to coordinate and strengthen the link between basic and applied research at the HZI and the MHH. He also served as founding director of the Centre for Individualised Infection Medicine (CiiM). In these positions, he greatly shaped and supported the HZI's research program. On 1 January 2019, Manns handed over both positions to Prof. Markus Cornberg, as he was appointed president of the MHH. At the end of 2024, he finally handed over the presidency to the current MHH President Prof. Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner and has held a senior professorship of the State of Lower Saxony since 1 January 2025. Michael Manns remained closely associated with the MHH, the HZI and the CiiM until the end.
