New Clinical Director at the HZI

Markus Cronberg succeeds Michael Manns as Clinical Director of the HZI

Prof Markus Cornberg, a medical doctor by training, is the new Clinical Director of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig. Cornberg will also become director of the Centre for Individualised Infection Medicine (CiiM), a collaboration of the HZI and the Hannover Medical School (MHH). He is the successor to Prof Michael Manns, who resigned from both positions due to his inauguration as president of the MHH effective 1 January 2019.

"Markus Cornberg being a DZIF professor and an active clinician will allow us to set up an important bridge to the clinical area in general and to the MHH in particular, strengthening the translational goals of the HZI. We are looking forward very much to our future collaboration," says Prof Dirk Heinz, who is the Scientific Director of the HZI. "We wish to express our gratitude to Michael Manns for his commitment and the forthcoming implementation of the CiiM plans based on his work, and look forward to our continued close collaboration in the future."

Markus Cornberg is a senior consultant of the Clinic for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at the MHH. He has also been the W2 professor for infectiology, with a focus on hepatitis, of the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) since March 2016. In addition to advancing the CiiM, his main tasks will be to incorporate clinical issues into the research activities of the HZI and to further intensify the collaboration of HZI researchers with clinicians. Markus Cornberg has been appointed these new positions for the upcoming three years.
