Three HZI scientists are among the most cited in their research fields

Alice McHardy, Marc Stadler and Jörg Vogel were honoured as “Highly-cited researchers”

Clarivate Analytics, a company specialising in bibliometric data, publishes an annual list of researchers who have had a significant impact on their field by publishing several highly-cited papers over the last ten years. In 2022, three department leaders of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) made it onto the list of “Highly-cited researchers”: Bioinformatician Prof Alice McHardy, biotechnologist Prof Marc Stadler and biochemist Prof Jörg Vogel were recognised for their influence on their respective fields.

Prof Alice McHardy heads the department “Computational Biology of Infection Research” at BRICS (Braunschweig Integrated Centre of Systems Biology), a joint facility of the HZI and the Technische Universität Braunschweig. With the help of computational methods, she examines biological and epidemiological data sets and develops new bioinformatics software. Prof Marc Stadler, head of the department “Microbial Drugs”, searches for new antibiotics in little or not at all studied active substance producers such as fungi and soil bacteria. In addition, the department establishes production processes of natural substances on a pre-industrial scale and optimises their processing. Prof Jörg Vogel, head of the department “RNA Biology of Bacterial Infections”, is the founding director of the Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI), a site of the HZI in cooperation with the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU). His department studies non-coding RNAs in pathogens as well as the microbiome and develops RNA sequencing methods at the single cell level.

The 2022 list of “Highly-cited researchers” includes a total of about 6,900 researchers.
