Music and Infections | An Inspiring Dialogue Between Music and Cutting-Edge Research

In collaboration with the Lessing Theater, the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) and the Friends of the HZI are bringing the “Sounds and Science” series to the stage. Founded in 2014 at the Medical University of Vienna, the series combines scientific insights with the emotional power of classical music.

In the “Music and Infections” edition, an ensemble of renowned musicians—including members of the Vienna Philharmonic—will perform works by Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Strauss, and Beethoven. Alternating with the performances, scientists from the HZI will provide insights into current research and shed light on infectious diseases that also shaped the lives of the composers. This creates an unusual dialogue between music and cutting-edge research.

The event makes complex topics accessible to a broad audience and demonstrates how closely creativity, originality, and scientific insight are intertwined. The idea to bring the Viennese musicians to Lower Saxony was initiated by Prof. Josef Penninger, Scientific Director of the HZI. The format has already proven successful in Vienna and Vancouver—and here, too, it combines music and science into a unique experience.
