From the ground to the pharmacy—antibiotics from soil bacteria

The MS Wissenschaft is a floating science center with exhibits that visitors can try out and participate in. It has now been on the road every summer for over 20 years. The Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) has an interactive exhibit showing how HIPS researchers search for new antibiotics in soil bacteria.

The more frequently we use antibiotics, the more they lose their effectiveness. The reason for this is that bacteria become resistant, i.e., insensitive to the active ingredient, over time. To ensure that effective antibiotics remain available to us in the future, we urgently need new active ingredients, namely those that can also combat resistant pathogens. Myxobacteria are helping us in our search for these active ingredients. These soil bacteria produce natural substances with antibacterial effects, which they use to hunt other bacteria and use them as a food source. The idea is that if myxobacteria can use these natural substances to combat bacteria in the soil, we may also be able to use the same molecules to combat bacterial infections in humans in the future.

Tour schedule

From May 7 to September 30, 2026, the MS Wissenschaft will stop in more than 30 cities in Germany, Poland, and Austria.
