The more frequently we use antibiotics, the more they lose their effectiveness. The reason for this is that bacteria become resistant, i.e., insensitive to the active ingredient, over time. To ensure that effective antibiotics remain available to us in the future, we urgently need new active ingredients, namely those that can also combat resistant pathogens. Myxobacteria are helping us in our search for these active ingredients. These soil bacteria produce natural substances with antibacterial effects, which they use to hunt other bacteria and use them as a food source. The idea is that if myxobacteria can use these natural substances to combat bacteria in the soil, we may also be able to use the same molecules to combat bacterial infections in humans in the future.
