The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, based in Braunschweig, is a member of the Helmholtz Association and conducts cutting-edge research in the field of infectious diseases. Our scientists develop novel methods and strategies to combat infectious diseases more quickly and effectively. Our common goal is to develop novel approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. Our research focuses on bacterial and viral pathogens, their interaction with the human immune system, and new effective drugs and vaccines.
The Finance and Controlling Department at the center manages the finances of the entire HZI. The department works closely with the scientific institutions and other administrative areas. The Project Controlling team is responsible for the management of third-party funded projects within the department. The team consists of ten members led by Dr. Berenike Henneberg.
With the MICROSTAR (Microbial Stargazing) project, the HZI aims to learn from the microbial world and decipher the fundamentals of its resilience and adaptability in order to apply these principles for the benefit of humans and nature. MICROSTAR is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMFTR) with around 30 million euros and includes several modules, such as the establishment of several junior research groups and other measures to support science. The MICROSTAR project started in October 2023 and will end in December 2029.
