The Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH) Greifswald is a branch of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI). Here, researchers investigate the connections between human health, animal health, and the environment. Our goal is to better understand zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and the evolution of pathogens, thereby contributing to the prevention of pandemics. Founded in 2021, the institute with its international and interdisciplinary research teams is a beacon for innovative One Health research in one of the most beautiful regions of Germany, right on the Baltic Sea.
In the laboratory, we work with a wide variety of samples from humans, animals, and the environment (e.g., flies, leaf swabs, air filters) and use a broad range of molecular biological and microbiological techniques.
Tasks
- Cleaning and disinfection of laboratories in accordance with hygiene plan within protection levels 1 to 3, including checking emergency and eye wash stations, disposal of laboratory waste and autoclave items, validation of disinfection measures
- Assistance with the elimination of accidents and biological spills, including in S3
- Loading of autoclaves, drying cabinets, dishwashers, including in S3
- Refilling and monitoring of cleaning and disinfection stations
- Checking and documenting cleaning results
- Maintenance of equipment, maintenance plans, including in S3
- Revalidation and quality control of machine programs
- Provision of culture media, including quality control
- Manufacture of sample storage containers for tissue, insects, environmental samples
- Goods receipt and documentation
- Supplying laboratories with consumables and chemicals, inventory monitoring
- Development of laundry cycles, including qualification of the protective clothing system
- Supporting external service providers and service personnel in the protection level area, including in S3
Prerequisites
- Completed vocational training as a laboratory assistant or comparable qualification with knowledge of laboratory work and/or biological safety areas
- Basic knowledge of hygiene and cleaning in biological safety areas
- Basic technical understanding
- Ability to perform heavy physical work on a regular basis (e.g., lifting 20 kg)
- Ability to independently assess biological/chemical hazards
- Ability to work with potentially infectious material
- Structured, independent work
Ability to organize work independently
The following are advantageous for this position:
- Knowledge or experience in protection and safety level 3 laboratories
- Basic knowledge of English or French
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel/Word)
- Good communication skills in an international and multicultural work environment
