The department IVON at the HZI, headed by Prof. Josef Penninger, is looking for a Technical Assistant.

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, the largest scientific organisation in Germany. The scientists at the HZI develop strategies to better combat infectious diseases. Their goal is to develop new approaches for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. To this end, they investigate bacterial and viral pathogens and their interaction with the immune system and explore new active substances.

Our research group is engaged in organoid-based research to better understand human organs and their functions. By using organoids, we create realistic models of human tissues that provide new insights into disease mechanisms and therapeutic approaches. To strengthen our team, we are looking for a technical assistant with solid experience in protein production and purification. The focus of the position is on the production of recombinant proteins that will be functionally tested in our organoid models.

Tasks

Your main tasks will include cloning expression constructs, establishing protein purification protocols, and producing and biochemically characterising proteins. You will also take on important organisational tasks in everyday laboratory work, such as ordering and managing consumables and coordinating technical processes. Initial insight into or interest in working with organoids is an advantage but not a prerequisite – you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in this area if you are interested.

Prerequisites
  • Completed training as a BTA, CTA or at least equivalent training
  • Practical experience with S2 and S3 organisms
  • Experience with molecular cloning methods (restriction/ligation, Gibson, SLIC, In-Fusion)
  • Experience with chromatographic methods for protein purification (affinity, ion exchange and size exclusion chromatography)
  • Experience with common protein-related analytical methods for quality assurance (SDS-PAGE, Western blot, nanoDSF, DLS)
  • Good written and spoken German and English
  • Good knowledge of MS Excel and Word
  • Willingness to work in a multidisciplinary, international team is required
  • Experience with the infection or transfection of cells and organoids is highly desirable

Advantages for this position:

  • Experience with human and insect cell culture
  • Experience with FPLC systems (Äkta) for protein purification
Working hours

39 hours per week

We offer you:

  • An attractive and varied job in a future-oriented research institute with an international environment at the Science Campus South in Braunschweig
  • A state-of-the-art infrastructure and the latest technologies
  • Flexible working hours, part-time models
  • A corporate culture of appreciation and promotion of equal opportunities
  • Extensive training and continuing education opportunities to develop professional knowledge and personal skills
  • A family office to support family and career as well as childcare offers
  • Interesting additional public service benefits
  • Option of an additional employer subsidy for the job ticket

People with severe disabilities and equivalent professional qualifications who are suitable for the position are given preference. In order to protect your rights, we ask you to provide us with a clearly recognizable reference to the existence of a degree of severe disability in your cover letter or resume.

The HZI is actively committed to equality, diversity and integration. For this reason, the HZI pursues the goal of professional equality between women and men. The position is suitable for part-time work.
