The Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH), a site of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) located in Greifswald, aims to explore links between human, animal, and environmental health. Our goal is to generate a better understanding of zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and the evolution of pathogens, critical cornerstones for ultimately developing pandemic preparedness and prevention. The institute was founded in 2021 and harbors international and interdisciplinary research teams creating a hub for cutting-edge One Health research at the Baltic Sea.
As Veterinarian (f/m/d) within the EU-funded project “ZooSursy” (https://rr-africa.woah.org/en/projects/zoo-sursy-project-enhancing-zoonotic-disease-surveillance-in-africa/ ) you will be part of the two research groups “Ecology and Emergence of Zoonotic Diseases” and “One Health Surveillance (OHS)”, and work closely with the other scientific research departments of the HIOH Greifswald. The project aims at sustainable capacity building, strengthening wildlife and livestock surveillance and pandemic preparedness for emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases in Africa.
Your tasks will include the responsible implementation of project activities with the aim of strengthening the surveillance of disease outbreaks in cooperation with local partners (WWF-CAR, DSPA and LACEVET) in the Central African Republic (CAR). You will also be involved in the communication of results to the population and stakeholders, as well as publication of scientific results.
Much of the work is done on site in Bayanga in the Central African Republic.
Tasks
- Coordination and implementation of workshops and trainings across several countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Rep. of Congo, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Chad)
- supervision of the operation of the WWF-CAR laboratory in Bayanga, Central African Republic including performance of basic laboratory analyses in the field
- Supervision and support of local Master’s and PhD students on-site in CAR
- Coordination of feedback of results to study participants, local responsible parties and global organizations
- Preparation of results for publication and presentation purposes
- Contribution to the scientific analyses and publication of collected data
- Administrative tasks (reporting, logistics)
- Coordination of the interface between project activities and the core activities of the OHS
- Continuous monitoring of project activities
Prerequisites
- A successfully completed degree in veterinary medicine
- Experience in coordinating and implementing international projects, preferably in Africa or other regions with weak infrastructure
- Business fluent in written and spoken English and good knowledge of French
- Strong motivation and organizational skills
- You are open-minded, resilient, committed, motivated and reliable
- Willingness to spend several weeks in the field in Central African Republic
- Strong writing and presentation skills
