The HZI is looking for a scientific computing and IT infrastructure specialist in the newly established Digital Office department.

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, based in Braunschweig, is a member of the Helmholtz Association and conducts cutting-edge research in the field of infectious diseases. Our scientists develop novel methods and strategies to combat infectious diseases more quickly and effectively. Our common goal is to develop novel approaches to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Our research focuses on bacterial and viral pathogens, their interaction with the human immune system, and new effective drugs and vaccines.

The digital transformation has become a key challenge both in the science of the HZI and in its administration. Rapid technological developments are revolutionising the way life science research is conducted and how we organise a research centre administratively.

The newly established Digital Office provides the framework for this. We develop, implement and advise on innovations and processes related to digitalisation. Our goal is to enable all employees to experience the great opportunities and possibilities of digitalisation for new insights and better work results.

This includes, above all, coordinating HZI Digital Health activities, as well as creating and implementing the fields of the scientific digitalisation strategy and implementing the administrative digitalisation strategy.
For this task, we are looking for innovative minds with a passion for learning and design. Our department creates a modern and flexible working environment that needs to be shaped by our own expertise and experience, while leaving room for personal growth. The task grows with you and you grow with the task.

Tasks

The core task of the Digital Office is to jointly set up the HZI for the data-driven research of the future. Data scientists in particular rely on a high-performance and scalable infrastructure. You will help to design and shape this infrastructure by

  • keeping an eye on the latest solutions and identifying relevant trends
  • analysing and determining research processes, the systems used and the resulting infrastructure requirements
  • keeping a constant eye on high-performance computing in particular, optimising and modernising it for new methods
  • also taking other technology trends such as cloud computing and AI into account
  • establishing suitable exchange formats and committees for decision-making
  • Not only plan strategies, but also implement them independently in projects

In addition to this technically demanding field of work, there is the opportunity to become deputy head of the Digital Office and represent the CDO.

Prerequisites
  • University degree in computer science or a similar field
  • Experience in developing IT strategies for scientific institutions with a focus on data science
  • In-depth knowledge of high-performance computing, method development and the application of modern IT infrastructures for complex simulations and data analysis
  • Knowledge of cloud computing, AI applications on HPC infrastructure and management/backup systems
  • The ability to identify and evaluate technological trends and transfer them to your own organisation
  • Experience in setting up and moderating exchange formats and committees for decision-making
  • Initial leadership experience as a team or department manager
  • Very good communication skills in German and English, both written and spoken
  • Willingness to acquire missing knowledge
Working hours

39 hours per week

We offer you:

  • An attractive and varied job in a future-oriented research institute with an international environment at the Science Campus South in Braunschweig
  • A state-of-the-art infrastructure and the latest technologies
  • Flexible working hours, part-time models as well as home office
  • A corporate culture of appreciation and promotion of equal opportunities
  • Extensive training and continuing education opportunities to develop professional knowledge and personal skills
