Dr. Frank Surup

Frank Surup promovierte 2007 bei Prof. Stephanie Grond und Prof. Axel Zeeck in Göttingen. Anschließend forschte er zwei Jahre an der Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA) im Labor von Prof. Jon Clardy.

Seit 2010 arbeitet er am Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung (HZI) in der Abteilung Mikrobielle Wirkstoffe. Dort entdeckte und entwickelte er zahlreiche neuartige Naturstoffe, von denen mehrere als Leitsubstanzen für die Medikamentenentwicklung von zentraler Bedeutung sind.

Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen die Optimierung von Kultivierungsbedingungen, die Produktion in Fermentern und biotechnologischen Anlagen sowie die Isolierung und Aufreinigung von Naturstoffen. Seine Kernkompetenz ist die Strukturaufklärung der Sekundärmetaboliten mittels spektroskopischer (z. B. NMR) und massenspektrometrischer Methoden.

Insbesondere untersucht er pflanzenassoziierte, filamentöse Pilze, aus denen er bislang über 300 neue Naturstoffe strukturell aufgeklärt hat.

Ihn fasziniert im Besondern, wie Naturstoffe die Interaktionen zwischen Bakterien, Pilzen und Pflanzen vermitteln – etwa als Virulenzfaktoren, Nahrungstoxine oder Abwehrstoffe.
