Epidemiology Spring School: "From Lab to Tables"

Practical Laboratory Course in Infectious Disease Epidemiology

The Spring School “From Lab to Tables“ is a laboratory training course addressing epidemiologists and clinicians interested in infectious diseases laboratory field work. The aim is to provide practical insight and advanced knowledge in collection of samples and diagnostic tools. We offer hands-on experience in diagnostic methods used for pathogen detection and classification.

Infectious diseases epidemiology is a discipline that analyzes the role of infections  and bacterial colonization on human health. However, unlike topics explored in other epidemiologic fields, infections are risk factors for disease and outcome at the same time. To study infections and the host response, infectious disease epidemiology relies heavily on the collection and analysis of biosamples such as nasal swabs and blood.

Teaching methods
The Spring School includes introductory lectures, its focus, however, is on practical work in the laboratory. The course is defined by a balanced mix of interactive hands-on lab experience and presentations. The course will be held in English.

Lab work
The practical work in the lab includes biosampling, bacteria isolation and identification, assays such as Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and DNA/RNA extraction. Results will be interpreted and discussed.

Enrollment is open for
epidemiologists, public health experts and biostaticians as well as students (PhD, MSc, MPH). Costs (Tuition) The tuition fee is 350.- EUR for external students (please provide certificate of enrollment) and 600.- EUR for external researchers/scientists.

On successful completion, participants will obtain a certificate issued by the Department for Epidemiology, HZI, and gain 40 Teaching Units.

The number of participants is restricted and we recommend you to apply as soon as possible. Acceptance is based on first come, first serve.

Deadline is 15th March 2018!
