The Sites of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research are distributed all over Germany. In addition to the main campus in Braunschweig, there are facilities in five other cities: Hamburg, Hanover, Saarbrücken, Würzburg and Greifswald.

Helmholtz Institute Greifswald

The Helmholtz Institute in Greifswald is being established as a branch of HZI in Braunschweig and will be closely linked to the University of Greifswald, the University Medicine Greifswald and the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut through a scientific cooperation agreement.

The new institute will follow a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to tackle health challenges arising from infectious diseases in line with the “One Health“ concept. The “One Health” Concept acknowledges that human health is tightly connected to the health of animals and an intact environment.

Globalization, climate change, enhanced mobility of humans, intensified livestock farming, as well as increasing urbanization and loss of natural habitats are key drivers for the onset and rapid spread of infections.Microbes move globally, breach species barriers and frequently develop multi-resistance. A global problem is also the lack of anti-infectives and vaccines. The current COVID-19 outbreak dramatically shows our still limited understanding of the origin and transmission of zoonotic infections and the urgent global need for more effective preventive and therapeutic measures to mitigate pandemic spread. The new institute will address this need and thus fill a critical gap.

University of Greifswald

Founded in 1456, the University of Greifswald is one of the oldest universities in Germany. Today, the university is an internationally recognized research university offering outstanding study conditions in modern buildings with an excellent infrastructure for research-led teaching. Cutting-edge research originates from the intensive interdisciplinary collaboration of the faculties with renowned regional, national and international research partners. An excellent research infrastructure is available to University’s scientists, including two interfaculty research buildings of national importance as well as an outstanding (meta)proteomics platform. Infection research at the university is based on interdisciplinary and cross-faculty research networks addressing important bacterial pathogens, diagnostics and therapy of infections, bacto-viral co-infections, spread of antimicrobial resistances, human and environmental microbiomes and bats as potential pathogen reservoir.
