Sites of the Helmholtz Centre

The Sites of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research are distributed all over Germany. In addition to the main campus in Braunschweig, there are facilities in five other cities: Hamburg, Hanover, Saarbrücken, Würzburg and Greifswald.

Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB)

In a globalised world infection research plays a major role. Worldwide exchange of goods and long-distance journeys support pathogens to spread easily. Thus, new approaches to fight diseases and infections are absolutly necessary. The research at the Centre for Structural Systems Biology at the DESY Campus in Hamburg is focused on these approaches.

The CSSB is an interdisciplinary centre where biologists, chemists, physicians, physicists and engineers explore the interactions of pathogens and their hosts. The centre is a collective initiative of ten northern German research partners:

Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM)
Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY)
European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)
Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ)
Hannover Medical School (MHH)
Heinrich Pette Institute (HPI)
Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI)
Universität Hamburg (UHH)
University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE)
Research Center Borstel (FZB)

The researchers focus on infection biology and medicine with the aim to find better treatment opportunities against bacterial and viral pathogens and to decode their mechanisms of attack. To reach this target mechanisms of important pathogenic processes are applied supported by imaging techniques.
