Quality control in sepsis care

Defining a target range for blood culture rates in German ICUs

Initiation of early and appropriate blood culture diagnostics is associated with both a reduction of sepsis mortality and a reduction of duration of antibiotic therapy. Reported blood culture rates in German ICUs are among the lowest in Europe. A target blood culture rate of 100-200 per 1000 patient days is recommended internationally, but it is not clear how it was derived. We use data from the German hospital infection surveillance system (KISS) in order to define target range for blood culture rates and thus provide a quality indicator related to health care of patients developing sepsis.
