Initial Training Network

INNOVATIVE, MECHANISTIC-BASED STRATEGIES FOR DELIVERY OF THERAPEUTIC MACROMOLECULES ACROSS CELLULAR AND BIOLOGICAL BARRIERS.

The PathChooser project has been granted by the European Seventh Framework Programme within the Initial Training Network (ITN) modality. According to the ITN philosophy, various scientific disciplines will converge in the PathChooser project in order to train the future professional nanomedical drug-delivery scientists.

The young scientist recruited by this ITN will develop their projects following the so called training-by-research principle, under the close supervision of expert researchers acting as tutors.

Aims

The main scientific aims of this network are, on the one hand, to overcome the key challenges in targeted delivery involving targets beyond biological barriers and, on the other hand, to develop nano-bio interfacial strategies for intracellular delivery.

For that purpose, a coordinated joint effort of 9 European research institutions (industry and academia) from 5 different countries (Ireland, Denmark, Germany, United Kingdom and Cyprus) will work synergistically in order to develop innovative therapeutic nanocarriers that will further overcome challenging biological barriers such as the blood-brain, placental, or pulmonary barriers. HIPS is responsible to understand the mechanism of uptake of biomacromolecules across cellular and non-cellular barriers, through the specific project entitled Interaction of Nanoparticles with the Pulmonary Barrier; the Role of Mucus in Health and Disease.

This project will be conducted at HIPS by the ITN-fellow Xabier Murgia under the supervision of Dr. Cristiane Carvalho and Prof. Dr. Claus-Michael Lehr.
