The Study Centre of the HZI in Hannover is one of 18 study centres of the German National Cohort (GNC) distributed throughout Germany. The GNC stands for the largest nationwide health study in Germany, investigating the causes of widespread diseases such as infections, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, dementia and the interrelationships between them.

200,000 representatively selected participants were medically examined and interviewed about their habits (e.g. physical activity, smoking, nutrition, occupation). In addition, blood, urine, stool and saliva samples as well as nasal swabs were collected from all study participants and stored in a central biobank for later research projects. After four years, the participants are invited to a follow-up examination at the study centre. In the course of the planned follow-up of up to 20 years, many participants will develop illnesses, which can then be linked to the data collected before the outbreak of the illness. Thus, the study offers unique opportunities for a variety of scientific investigations for better early detection, prevention and treatment of diseases. The study is publicly funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Helmholtz Association and the federal states. So far, the Hannover study centre has examined 10,000 of the overall 200,000 GNC participants, offering them additional in-depth studies on infectious diseases.
