Werner Müller "SysmedIBD: Systems Medicine of Inflammatory Bowel Disease"

Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a chronic inflammation of the gut. Two such diseases are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. In Europe about 10 in 100.000 people suffer from ulcerative colitis and about 5 in 100.000 people from Crohn's disease. The disease can start at an early age. The disease cannot be cured and lifelong management of the disease is required. A systems medicine approach, including as much data as can be collected and incorporated into mathematical models, will allow the general practitioner, the specialist and the patient to better stratify and manage the disease. In the presentation first an overview of the SysmedIBD consortium will be presented. After this introduction to Systems Medicine, latest results on animal models deficient for the cytokine Interleukin-10 or its receptor will be discussed and new transgenic mice visualising the NF-kb pathway will be presented. Werner Muller was the Department Head of Experimental Immunology at the Helmholtz Centre of Infection research from 2000 to 2008. He accepted the Bill Ford Chair position at the University of Manchester in 2006. He is currently the Research Theme Director for Infection, Inflammation and Immunity at the Faculty of Life Sciences of the University of Manchester. More information about SysmedIBD can be found at http://www.sysmedIBD.eu.

  • Overview

The "HZI Colloquium" is a scientific lecture series at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, organized to host internationally renowned experts from the field of infection research. Invited guest speakers present their current research activities to a scientific audience. The presentation is followed by an open discussion.
We cordially invite interested scientists to take part in this colloquium.
The HZI Colloquium takes place on Wednesdays, 5.15 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. in the Forum, X0.13.
