Official HZI jubilee event

HZI-Jubilee_en

Within our official jubilee event on 6 October 2015 ( 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) we would like to look back at the history of the Centre, shed light on its current status and discuss which topics might be relevant in the future.

  • Overview

2015 is a special year for the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig: we are turning 50! In October 1965 the first laboratories took up work on the campus were the HZI is now located.

Since the beginnings a lot has changed. Founded as the Institute of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Biophysics (IMB), the Federal Republic of Germany became the main stakeholder of the institute in 1975 which was then renamed as German Research Centre for Biotechnology mbH (GBF) in 1976. Since then the GBF was a member of the Association of National Research Centers (AGF), which later became the Helmholtz Association. From the early 2000s a shift in the research focus of the Centre started taking place resulting in the Centre being renamed Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in 2006.

Over the years the research site in Braunschweig-Stöckheim has become one of the outstanding research institutions in the area of infection research worldwide. A development we want to celebrate during our anniversary year.

The official HZI jubilee event on 6 October 2015 is only part of a year full of celebrations. Over the entire year we want to tell the success story that the HZI has become and will be presenting the research of the past, present and future on these pages.
