Muhamad Fairus Noor Hassim: “Silence Cytomegalovirus: Bimodal switch, the macrophage way”

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality amongst immuno-compromised individuals and is the leading cause of congenital diseases amongst newborn infants. Mouse CMV (MCMV) infection of inbred mice has been extensively used as a model for HCMV pathogenesis and hostvirus interaction. Macrophages are a key target cell type in the pathogenesis of human and mouse CMV infections. Macrophages are semi-permissive to CMV infection, however, the nature of this restrictive mechanism of infection is open for investigation. It has been assumed that the virus principally governs such bimodal switching, but a role for cellular decision-making remains open. We identified, for murine cytomegalovirus-infected macrophages but not fibroblasts, that the decision is cell-intrinsic. Our results advance the concept, outside viral control, of a cell-regulatory and metabolic network governing the on/off state of infection in macrophages, with benefits for both host immunity and virus latency.

  • Overview

The "HZI Colloquium" is a scientific lecture series at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, organized to host internationally renowned experts from the field of infection research. Invited guest speakers present their current research activities to a scientific audience. The presentation is followed by an open discussion.

We cordially invite interested scientists to take part in this colloquium.
The HZI Colloquium takes place on Wednesdays, 5.15 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. in the Forum, X0.13.
