Jonathan Howard "Function of the Interferon-Inducible Immunity-Related GTPases in the Innate Immune Response to Toxoplasma Gondii Infection"

Jonathan Howard s 3

“IRG proteins are members of a distinctive family of large GTPases, with a core stucture of about 47 kDa. The family is highly developed in the mouse, but appears first in evolution in the cephalochordates. Its representation in different vertebrate groups is remarkably erratic, being absent (so far) in birds, and very much reduced in the higher primates. In the mouse the majority of IRG-encoding genes are strongly inducible by interferons and have been shown to be essential for normal immunity. However the range of pathogens that have been shown in publications to be resisted by the IRG system is extremely narrow, namely two Chlamydia strains and the protozoan, Toxoplasma gondii. Most of the functional and mechanistic work on IRG proteins has been done with mouse proteins. In my talk I will describe the work we have done to describe the biochemistry and cell biology of the IRG proteins, and indicate a possible mode of action. I will also discuss recent published and especially unpublished work highlighting the dynamic evolutionary relationship between Toxoplasma gondiiand the house mouse, an antagonistic host-pathogen co-evolutionary race at the molecular level which has resulted in polymorphic variation in IRG proteins at least equal to that of the major histocompatibility complex.”

  • Overview

The "HZI Colloquium" is a scientific lecture series at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, organized to host internationally renowned experts from the field of infection research. Invited guest speakers present their current research activities to a scientific audience. The presentation is followed by an open discussion.
We cordially invite interested scientists to take part in this colloquium.
The HZI Colloquium takes place on Wednesdays, 5.15 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. in the Forum, X0.13.
