Eric Vivier "Natural Killer Cells, Innate Lymphoid Cells and Innate Immunity"

Natural Killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes of the innate immune system, involved in the elimination of tumors and microbe-infected cells. NK cells sense their cellular targets via inhibitory receptors that recognise surface molecules expressed at steady-state and via activating receptors that recognise stress-induced molecules. NK cells thus express an array of receptors which detect these molecular changes and which trigger cell-mediated cytotoxicity and cytokine production when engaged. In addition NK cells can kill target cells by antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity if the cells have been tagged by antibodies. Besides NK cells, a novel group of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) is emerging. The biology of both NK and ILCs will be reviewed.
