Cuno S.P.M. Uiterwaal "The Wheezing Illnesses Study in Leidsche Rijn (Whistler and Whistler-Cardio)"

Cuno Uiterwaal

The Whistler study is a birth cohort that started in 2001. The initial purpose was to study determinants of lower respiratory tract illnesses, particularly wheezing and later asthma. In 2005, research questions were extended with early life determinants for vascular development. The presentation on the Whistler cohort will be some explanation on the original objectives, the current stage of the cohort, and plans for further follow-up of children. Some of the logistical challenges will also be discussed. The Whistler cohort has drawn a lot of interest from other disciplines that consider joining for specific research questions. One of these is a recent collaboration between general pediatrics at our academic children’s hospital and our division’s general practice section. That collaboration recently started exploring the possibility to extend Whistler towards a childhood infectious disease cohort. This will have implications for study design, for logistics and for data-management and –analysis. Given that this extension aligns with the plans in Braunschweig, some preliminary findings and experiences from a pilot study on determinants of middle ear infection will be briefly discussed. Overall, the intention of the presentation will indeed be to share our experience such that it might help any considerations about setting up such cohort in Braunschweig.
