Increasing (multi)-resistance towards established antibiotics is a serious medical problem. Re-emerging and new infectious diseases are of equal concern. In addition, the development of new drugs against such illnesses is
currently based mainly on known mechanisms of action and old molecule scaffolds, which allows bacteria to develop and spread resistance rapidly. There is thus an urgent need for new strategies aimed at the discovery and
development of novel anti-infective pharmaceuticals: This is the research focus of the Helmholtz-Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS).
