The Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) is offering a Technical Assistant or Biology Lab Assistant (m/f/d) position in the Research Group RNA Synthetic Biology (RSYN) under the direction of Prof. Dr. Chase Beisel. The Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) was established in May 2017 as a joint venture between the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig and the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg (JMU). The HIRI is the first research institution worldwide to exclusively address the role of ribonucleic acids (RNA) in infection processes. Based on novel findings, innovative therapeutic approaches are developed in an integrated research approach and made clinically usable through the development of pharmaceutical forms of application. For more information, please visit The Beisel lab works at the interface of CRISPR biology and technologies, with the long-term goal of developing new tools to better understand, diagnose, and treat human infections.


The TA or biology lab assistant will primarily support the development of a new CRISPR-based diagnostic toward commercialization. They may also complete routine tasks required to maintain regular operation of the research laboratory.


Competitive applicants should have completed vocational training as a TA or biology lab technician and should have extensive experience with molecular biology, biotechnology, and/or microbiology. Tasks should be carried out largely independently after training. Additionally, applicants should be highly organized, detail oriented, self-motivated, communicate effectively, possess solid technical understanding, and show interest in solving technical problems independently. As a given, the TA or biology lab technician will be expected to readily familiarize themselves with new systems and methods, exhibit a high degree of care and attention, and show conscientiousness in everyday laboratory work. The basic ability to communicate in English and German as well as the safe handling of standard computer software is expected.

Advantages for this position:

Experience with instrumental analytics as well as gene cloning and next-generation sequencing are highly desirable. Practical experience with current software systems for molecular biology equipment and data processing are also beneficial.
