The Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), Department Drug Design and Optimisation is looking for a doctoral researcher (f/m/d), chemist.


The Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) investigates new active substances to treat diseases of high medical need and public relevance. It was founded in August 2009 as a location of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig together with Saarland University. A new research building was opened on the campus of Saarland University in 2015. Currently, more than 170 employees with international background work at the institute. HIPS is the first publicly funded, non-university research institution in Germany that is explicitly dedicated to pharmaceutical research. The institute cooperates with international and national research institutions and companies. The advertised DFG-funded position will be dedicated to drug discovery efforts in close collaboration with Saarland University.

Your area of responsibility:

In the department "Drug Design and Optimisation", we discover and optimize novel active agents against bacterial (e.g. Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), viral pathogens (e.g. SARS-CoV-2), but also other highly relevant diseases (diabetes and cancer). You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists aiming at the design, synthesis and optimization of novel and highly potent small organic molecules as inhibitors of a novel anti-tumor and potential diabetes target (IMP2). This will require the planning and conduction small molecule synthesis by organic chemistry. Your tasks include working on current issues in drug research as well as preparing presentations as a basis for discussion in project meetings.

Your profile:

You have completed your studies as a chemist of pharmacist (master's degree or diploma). You are highly motivated and interested in topics related to pharmaceutical research. The ability to work in an international team and excellent communication skills in English are also required for this position. Strong knowledge and experience in the procedures of organic synthesis as well as compound purification and characterization (LC-MS, NMR) are highly desirable. Experience with the principles of medicinal chemistry would be beneficial. The confident handling of standard computer software such as MS Office is a matter of course for you.

Remuneration: alike E13 TVöD/Bund (55%)

Working time: 19.5 hours per week
