Helmholtz Junior Research Group Leaders (with tenure option)
The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI), a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, invites applications for the positions of independent Helmholtz Junior Research Group Leaders (with tenure option) in the field of infectious disease research HZI is Germany’s largest academic institution dedicated exclusively to infection research. In line with its translational mission, it develops new strategies for the early detection, prevention and treatment of bacterial and viral infections. Through its unique strength in natural product research, HZI is engaged jointly with industry in the discovery and development of novel anti-infectives. As a member of the German Centre for Infection Research (DZIF), HZI makes important contributions to translational infection research on a national and international scale. In response to increasing risks of zoonotic disease emergence and apparent links between human, animal, and environmental health, the HZI fosters transdisciplinary approaches using a One Health framework at human-animal interfaces. Strategic partnerships with national and international universities, the university medicine and other research institutions have led to the establishment of several branch institutes addressing major challenges in the areas of clinically oriented infection research, personalized medicine, pharmaceutical research, RNA-biology, molecular and cellular imaging, data science as well as lately One Health approaches. Strong networks within the Helmholtz Health Centres enable cross-disease cooperations. The candidates, highly qualified junior scientists with an international track-record holding a PhD or MD, should have an excellent scientific track record and postdoctoral experience in one of the following areas: Microbiology including microbiota, phages, virology, immunology, vaccinology and immunotherapy, bioinformatics and systems biology, drug research, and applied disease ecology. Junior Research Groups will be funded for a period of 5 years. Funding covers the positions of the group leader, a postdoctoral scientist, a PhD student, a technician as well as consumables and instrumentation. Based on a positive external review, a permanent position as group leader at the HZI will be offered to successful Junior Research Group Leaders. Selected candidates can expect a lively scientific environment with a wide variety of exchange between HZI’s research topics and access to excellent infrastructure and networks. The Junior Research Group Leaders will gain scientific independence and high visibility in the community and can benefit from outstanding leadership training at the Helmholtz Management Academy. HZI provides a family-friendly environment and is strongly committed to increase the proportion of female faculty members. It therefore encourages applications by female candidates. Candidates with disabilities will be given preference, provided they are equally qualified.
