2 post-doctoral associate (f/m/d)

Code: 02/2023

The Department of Pathogen Evolution at the Helmholtz Institute for One Health in Greifswald (HIOH) is looking for 2 post-doctoral associate (f/m/d). The HIOH Greifswald is a cooperation site of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) with a focus on One Health research. This interdisciplinary approach includes the integrated monitoring and improvement of human and animal health as well as environmental and climatic factors. Research at the HIOH focuses on the emergence and prevention of zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance. The Department of Pathogen Evolution generally aims at providing a compelling evolutionary framework to understand the emergence and spread of infectious agents in human and animal populations. For this, it characterizes long-term dynamics of host-pathogen associations using comparative approaches across host species and it reconstructs recent, major pathogen emergence events and their immediate consequences using pathogen paleogenomics. This advertisement specifically aims at reinforcing this second avenue of research, where HIOH has already reached a position of international prominence by producing landmark studies using ancient pathology specimens. The applicant will be expected to bring to fruition one of the ongoing projects on the origins and evolution of human- and animal-infecting respiratory RNA viruses.

  • finalizing sampling activities by establishing new collaborations with pathology collections worldwide
  • running lab analyses yourself, from initial nucleic extraction to the enrichment of high-throughput sequencing (HTS) libraries
  • supervising a technical assistant who will be assigned part-time to your project
  • running computational analyses, from viral genome assembly to advanced phylogenetic analyses

  • Ph.D. in biological sciences/bioinformatics, medicine, veterinary medicine or pharmacy
  • either complete mastery of molecular biology in the laboratory (including HTS) and basic computer skills (e.g. R or Bash scripting) or vice versa
  • strong writing and presentation skills
