The Department of Pathogen Evolution at the Helmholtz Institute for One Health in Greifswald (HIOH) is looking for 2 post-doctoral associate (f/m/d). The HIOH Greifswald is a cooperation site of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) with a focus on One Health research. This interdisciplinary approach includes the integrated monitoring and improvement of human and animal health as well as environmental and climatic factors. Research at the HIOH focuses on the emergence and prevention of zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance. The Department of Pathogen Evolution generally aims at providing a compelling evolutionary framework to understand the emergence and spread of infectious agents in human and animal populations. For this, it characterizes long-term dynamics of host-pathogen associations using comparative approaches across host species and it reconstructs recent, major pathogen emergence events and their immediate consequences using pathogen paleogenomics. This advertisement specifically aims at reinforcing this second avenue of research, where HIOH has already reached a position of international prominence by producing landmark studies using ancient pathology specimens. The applicant will be expected to bring to fruition one of the ongoing projects on the origins and evolution of human- and animal-infecting respiratory RNA viruses.
