The Department Microbial Immune Regulation of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) is looking for a Student Assistant for up to 35 hours per month.

The human gut microbiome contains thousands of microbial species and trillions of microbial cells. Advances in shotgun metagenomics have enabled us to identify these microbes and explore their roles in human health. However, these advances also produce large, complex datasets that require strong computational and bioinformatics skills.

We are seeking a highly motivated student research assistant (HiWi) with a background in bioinformatics to help us turn complex metagenomic data into new biomedical insights.

Tasks
  • Run established in-house bioinformatics pipelines for large metagenomic datasets
  • Contribute to data curation, including clinical metadata, metagenomic, and metatranscriptomic information
  • Assist in data analysis, statistical evaluation, and visualization
  • Support code and pipeline documentation
  • Contribute to code and pipeline management and optimization
Prerequisites

We are looking for a student assistant who enjoys the activities described.

  • Student in Bioinformatics or related life science degree with a focus on computational methods.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language: Python, R, or Bash (and comfortable with the other two).
  • Familiarity with Unix systems.
  • A basic understanding of HPC (High-Performance Computing) environments is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of biostatistics, ecology, evolution, and molecular biology is advantageous.
  • Strong motivation to develop new computational skills and deepen biomedical knowledge.
  • Independent and structured way of working
  • Careful work is one of the basic requirements for this responsible task
  • Organizational talent and good communication skills
Working hours

35 hours per months, by arrangement

We offer you:

  • An attractive and varied job in a future-oriented research institute with an international environment
  • A state-of-the-art infrastructure and the latest technologies
  • First insights into everyday working life
  • Flexible working hours and home office
  • A corporate culture of appreciation and promotion of equal opportunities
  • Remote working possible
