HZI International Graduate School for Infection Research (GS-FIRE)
The HZI International Graduate School for Infection Research (GS-FIRE) provides an innovative structured PhD programme within the field of Infection Research. Implemented at the campus of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig together with its partner universities GS-FIRE has created an electrifying environment where young researchers are stimulated to exchange knowledge with their colleagues, peers and leading scientists from around the world. Besides intensive scientific training the young researchers have the possibility of improving their soft skills and advancing their interdisciplinary knowledge in preparation for the job market.
Starting in 2009 all new PhD candidates were integrated into the HZI Graduate School. About 180 young researchers actively participate in the GS-FIRE. Of these, more than 40% have an international background. In 2015 the Graduate School included people from 27 different countries. High quality standards are in place to ensure optimal training. This includes not only professional recruitment of the PhD candidates but also accreditation of the supervisors, evaluation of the PhD projects on offer and assessment of all available lectures and courses. Supervision is supported and ensured by thesis committees of scientists who meet regularly to track the progress of the PhD project. The training programme complements the individual research activities and aims at optimal preparation of the young researchers for their future careers. They are trained in a broad spectrum of research areas relevant for infection defence and have to master classical and novel techniques. The curriculum of GS-FIRE covers basic research and translational aspects, thus qualifying young scientists in the field of infection research and beyond.
We invite highly motivated applicants
The three-year study programme is aimed at university post-graduates (MSc/Diploma) from the life sciences as well as those who have graduated in human or veterinary medicine and bioinformatics. Applicants should be highly motivated, have an active interest in the field of infection biology and expertise in laboratory practices. The programme is well supported by a network of scientists and supervisors. PhD candidates will complete the programme as highly qualified scientists in infection research and be competitive for the job market.
Excellent English skills are a basic requirement as the programme is offered in English.
