Epidemiologie

Epidemiologie erforscht Gesundheit und Krankheit auf der Bevölkerungsebene – die Infektionsepidemiologie beschäftigt sich mit übertragbaren Krankheiten. Ihre Werkzeuge und Methoden sind systematische Befragungen, klinische Untersuchungen und labordiagnostische Nachweise sowie statistische Analysen. So können Ursachen und Risikofaktoren für Infektionen identifiziert werden. Die Infektionsepidemiologie trägt zur Entwicklung von Präventionsmaßnahmen, ebenso wie zur Früherkennung und Therapie von Erkrankungen bei. Zudem überprüft sie die Wirksamkeit solcher Maßnahmen.

    Mit einem neuen mobilen Informationssystem bekämpfen deutsche Wissenschaftler vom Braunschweiger Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung (HZI) und nigerianische Forscher erstmals einen Affenpocken-Ausbruch in Nigeria. SORMAS – so der Name des Systems – steht für „Surveillance, Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System“. Wie das mobile Epidemie-Management-System funktioniert, das erklärt Prof. Gérard Krause vom HZI kurz und knapp in einer Minute.

  • MuSPAD - die bundesweite Antikörperstudie des HZI zur Verbreitung von SARS-CoV-2-Infektionen

    Wie viele Personen waren in Deutschland schon mit dem Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 infiziert und wie entwickelt sich die Pandemie? Diese und weitere Fragen untersucht das Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung mit dem Projekt MuSPAD (Multilokale und Serielle Prävalenzstudie zu Antikörpern gegen SARS-2-Coronavirus in Deutschland). In verschiedenen regionalen Stichproben wird ausgewählten freiwilligen Probanden Blut abgenommen und auf SARS-CoV-2-Antikörper untersucht.

  • Dem Erreger auf der Spur: Wie Epidemiolog:innen SARS-CoV-2-Ansteckungswege erforschen

    Seit über einem Jahr leben wir mit SARS-CoV-2. Wir tragen Masken, halten Abstand, schränken unsere Kontakte ein. Und trotzdem liegt die Zahl der täglichen Neuinfektionen in den zehntausenden. Oft fragen wir uns: „Wo stecken sich all diese Menschen an?“ Die Ärztin und Epidemiologin Dr. Berit Lange aus der Abteilung „Epidemiologie" am Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung (HZI) beschreibt in diesem Video, mit welchen Methoden sie und ihre Kolleg:innen dem Erreger auf der Spur sind. Sie erklärt, warum es nicht trivial ist, Ansteckungswege darzustellen und welche Strukturen Epidemiolog:innen für die Zukunft geschaffen haben.

    Berit Lange untersucht in der Abteilung Epidemiologie des Helmholtz-Zentrums für Infektionsforschung, wie die Belastung durch armutsbedingte Infektionskrankheiten in gefährdeten Bevölkerungsgruppen und schwachen Gesundheitssystemen verringert werden kann.

  • Wie trägt das HZI zur Bewältigung der Coronavirus-Pandemie bei?

    Seit Beginn der SARS-CoV-2-Pandemie hat das Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung (HZI) in Braunschweig seine Forschungsaktivitäten auf das neuartige Coronavirus fokussiert. Stellvertretend für die vielseitigen Forschungsprojekte des HZI stellen drei Wissenschaftler:innen ihre Beiträge zur Bewältigung der Pandemie vor. Prof. Michael Meyer-Hermann entwickelt mathematische Modelle für den Pandemieverlauf. Prof. Melanie Brinkmann hat Übertragungswege bei einem großen Coronavirusausbruch untersucht und gezeigt, dass der Erreger über Aerosole verbreitet werden kann. Prof. Gérard Krause leitet eine Antikörperstudie, um die Entwicklung der Pandemie zu beobachten, und entwickelt digitale Tools wie das System SORMAS, das den öffentlichen Gesundheitsdienst bei der Pandemiebekämpfung unterstützt.
