Chemische Biologie der Kohlenhydrate

Pseudomonas aeruginosa ist allgegenwärtig, krankheitserregend und lebt in schleimigen Lebensgemeinschaften, sogenannten Biofilmen. Etwa 90 Prozent der Mukoviszidose-Patienten sterben an diesem Keim. Außerdem hat sich das Bakterium zu einem der Hauptverursacher von Krankenhausinfektionen entwickelt. Die Behandlung ist problematisch, denn durch sein Leben im Biofilm ist der Keim gut vor dem Immunsystem und auch vor Antibiotika geschützt. Zudem bildet er zunehmend Resistenzen gegen Antibiotika aus. Unsere Wissenschaftler entwickeln Substanzen, die diese Biofilme auflösen sollen und damit P. aeruginosa angreifbar machen. Diese Gruppe hat ihren Sitz am Helmholtz-Institut für Pharmazeutische Forschung Saarland (HIPS).
