Inflammation and regeneration
Infection with pathogens or injuries may provoke an inflammatory response of the organism. The primary role of such acute inflammations is to eliminate the pathogens, to promote tissue repair and to return the host to normal function. However, acute inflammations may continue to develop into a chronic form. Then additional inflammatory cell types are recruited to the site of inflammation which will eventually lead to the destruction of the tissue in or near the inflammatory process. The scientists of this project follow the hypothesis that interference with inflammatory signalling cascades will allow the design of novel and efficient anti-inflammatory modalities.
