DrugBioTune - Process and target directed exploitation of catalytic and regulatory plasticity of drug biosynthetic pathways

Microorganisms have proved themselves as a source of much-needed new anti-infective drugs. In recent years, genomic research has revealed the enormous performance level of microorganisms for the production of antibiotics and antimycotics. However, a critical point is still the exploitation of these unused resources, since many genes involved in the biosynthesis of natural products are not or only insufficiently expressed under laboratory conditions.

In this project, the molecular mechanisms of the biosynthetic regulation in prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms are to be deciphered and innovative methods for the control or bridging of the same are to be developed. The generalizability of the findings is demonstrated by selected examples. In addition, the same strategies are used to obtain antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic drugs which have not yet been accessible. The project is complemented by the pharmacological characterization of new biogenic agents and studies on the structure-activity relationship (SAR) to evaluate the potential of these compounds for human, veterinary, and agrochemical applications.
