Our Research

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research contributes to the achievement of the goals of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres and to the successful implementation of the research strategy of the German Federal Government. The research activities of the Helmholtz Association are divided into six areas of research with various research programmes. The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research focuses on the programme "Infection and Immunity". The goal of the programme is to solve the challenges in infection research and make a contribution to public health with new strategies for the prevention and therapy of infectious diseases.

As part of this long-term objective, the research projects of the HZI were divided into five areas of infectious disease research which are pooled in the following topics:

How are pathogens making us sick?

Microbial Pathogenesis asks how microorganisms cause infectious diseases. How do bacteria, viruses and funghi adhere to their host cells?

Why me and not my neighbour?

Host Resistance and Susceptibility examines why an organism is susceptible to or resistant against infectious diseases.

How do we defend and protect ourselves?

Inflammation and Immunity deals with the processes which lead to an immediate defence reaction and how our body builds up a protection.

Prevention or aftertreatment?

Prevention and Therapy - the two pillars against diseases. Vaccines help in advance and anti-infectiva during the initial phase.

How are new medicines created?

Pharmaceutical Research is the focus of the new Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research of Saarland.
