Thomas Mettenleiter did his PhD in genetics at the University of Tübingen. Afterwards he worked abroad in the USA. Since 1994 he is the head of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI).

The FLI is the national research centre for animal health, located on the Island of Riems near Greifswald. The FLI has 11 institutes in 7 locations, including Brunswick (Institute of Animal Nutrition). Two of the many research fields of the FLI are avian influenca and Influenca A.
