Am 11.09. und 12.09.2006 findet in der GBF eine Fortbildungsveranstaltung zum Thema Gentechnik-Sicherheitsverordnung (GenTSV) statt. Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an GBF-Mitarbeiter, darüber hinaus sind aber auch externe Wissenschaftler und Ingenieure, sowie Fachbeamte von Genehmigungs- und Aufsichtsbehörden, die die Sachkunde gemäß §15 GenTSV erwerben wollen, willkommen.
Der Kurs ist durch die zuständige Behörde als Fortbildungsveranstaltung nach §15 Abs. 2 Satz 1 Nr. 1 GenTSV anerkannt.

Neben etablierten zellulären Therapien aus Blut gibt es eine zunehmende Anzahl von Stammzellen und differenzierten Zellen aus unterschiedlichen Quellen mit therapeutischem Potential. Viele dieser zellulären Produkte sind auf dem Wege in die Klinik. Das Ziel der gemeinsamen Veranstaltung des Berufsverbandes deutscher Transfusionsmediziner (BDT), des InnoNet Projektes "Integriertes patientennahes Verfahren zur Herstellung einer therapeutischen zellulären Vakzine im geschlossenen System" und der Gesellschaft für Biotechnologische Forschung (GBF) ist es, Klinikern und klinisch orientierten Wissenschaftlern neue Entwicklungen auf diesem Gebiets vorzustellen. Schwerpunkte der Tagung bilden die zelluläre Immuntherapie von Krebserkrankungen und die regenerative Therapie von Knochen, Knorpel und Herzklappen. Neben den medizinisch-biologischen Grundlagen werden auch die technologischen und regulatorischen Aspekte behandelt, die für die erfolgreiche Umsetzung dieser neuen Therapieansätze in die klinische Praxis beachtet werden sollten.

Who is Citing your publications, your institution, Your Researcher? How can you easily locate pertinent and influential publications in your domain?
The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research has access to the Web of Science®, Thomson ISI®'s premier portal to the Science Citation Index Expanded with 6,200 journals; the Social Science Citation Index with 1800 journals and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index with over 1200 journals.
The Web of Science provides you with access to the bibliographic information within these journals with unique linking capabilities and several search options. You can search for your topic, papers that you have written, papers published by a company or university, and papers that have cited your work.
Guillaume Rivalle, a member of the Thomson Scientific Customer Education department, will provide a product training on the 13th of December at 10am. This seminar provides instruction on the navigation and uses of the Web of Science.
You will learn how to navigate, how to expand your search using Related Records, and how to do a cited reference search to find the number of papers that cited your work. You will also learn to save and run search strategies, create citation alerts and to print, save, and export your results. We will also describe how the database is created, the journal selection process, and Thomson Scientific’s editorial policies.
The session will also explain the use of the Journal Citation reports.

“Signal Specific Activation of NF-kB in Immunity and Lymphomagenesis”
NF-kB transcription factors are master regulators of normal and pathological immune cell function. Their controlled activation is essential for regulated immunity, while deregulated NF-kB activity contributes to a wide variety of inflammatory diseases and cancer. This seminar will discuss signal transduction pathways that activate NF-kB downstream of distinct immunoreceptors by focusing on the two proteins Bcl10 and Malt1. Both molecules were originally isolated from recurrent chromosomal translocations in B cell lymphomas. These two proteins form a signaling complex that can receive various physiological inputs from innate and adaptive immune cell receptors. Bcl10 and Malt1 couple these upstream stimuli to the classical IKK dependent NF-kB pathway to mediate context dependent immune cell activation. However, overexpression of Bcl10 or Malt1 in lymphoma leads to abberrant NF-kB activation and promotes tumorigenesis by inducing constitutive survival and proliferation signals. Results from the analysis of various mouse models with mutations in the Bcl10/ Malt1 signaling cascade will be presented.

Am 24.09. und 25.09.2007 findet im Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung eine Fortbildungsveranstaltung zum Thema Gentechnik-Sicherheitsverordnung (GenTSV) statt. Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an HZI-Mitarbeiter, darüber hinaus sind aber auch externe Wissenschaftler und Ingenieure, sowie Fachbeamte von Genehmigungs- und Aufsichtsbehörden, die die Sachkunde gemäß §15 GenTSV erwerben wollen, willkommen.
Der Kurs ist durch die zuständige Behörde als Fortbildungsveranstaltung nach §15 Abs. 2 Satz 1 Nr. 3 GenTSV anerkannt.

The field of genetics continues to witness impressive advances in understanding the hereditary basis of the structure, function and evolution of living systems. The next International Congress of Genetics, to be held in Berlin, Germany, July 12-17, 2008, will address the latest developments in this exciting frontier of science.
Genomics, the study of complete genomes, has revolutionized genetic research. Complete and annotated genome sequences and comprehensive maps of polymorphism are available for many model organisms, including the genomes of man and our closest relative, the chimpanzee. Genome architectures and structure-function relationships of complex macromolecular assemblies are being elucidated in ever greater depth. Genome-wide transcriptome and proteome analyses are widely available. Powerful technologies are at hand to generate both heritable and transient genetic perturbations. Importantly, comparative genomics provides deep insights into evolutionary mechanisms underlying genetic variation, adaptation and speciation. Genomic polymorphisms among humans reveal a rich picture of our recent evolutionary history as well as the genetic, epigenetic and environmental contributions to disease risk.
Impressive progress has already been made in the bioinformatic and mathematic integration of genomic data. Computational analyses of genomic data and the simulation of models of biological systems are yielding the new discipline of computational genetics as well as the first steps toward a synthetic biology.

Langzeitnarkosen und Mikrochirurgie ermöglichen es heute, die dynamische Prozesse in Organen und Geweben der lebenden Maus mit hochauflösender Lichtmikroskopie zu untersuchen. Hierfür sind Kenntnisse über den dreidimensionalen Aufbau des Zielgewebes oder Zielorgans aus jedem Beobachtungswinkel die unabdingbare Voraussetzung.
Als Modellstrukturen wählte Bin Ma sekundäre lymphatische Organe, die mikrochirurgisch leicht zugänglich sind (Milz, Lymphknoten und die Peyer´schen Patches in der Darmschleimhaut). Für diese Organe entwickelte er systematisch Schnitt- und Färbemethoden, die über die Multifarben-Immunfluoreszenzmikroskopie eine 3D Rekonstruktion ermöglichten. Zur Auswertung verfeinerte er Bildverarbeitungsverfahren, die sich zur detaillierten Darstellung der Zielstrukturen eignen - .darunter eine Variante des bekannten „stiching Verfahrens“, mit dem der Fotograf normalerweise Panoramabilder zusammenführt. So entstand eine elegante Methode, welche die Darstellung von Organquer- und Längsschnitten in hoher räumlicher Auflösung ermöglicht. Dem Preisträger ist mit einer Vielzahl von sich ergänzender Techniken ein entscheidender Schritt hin zur Gesamtrekonstruktion eines Organs gelungen.
Bin Ma hat seine Ergebnisse noch während der laufenden Promotionsarbeiten in zahlreichen viel beachteten Publikationen niedergelegt, die ihm schließlich die Abgabe einer kumulativen Promotionsschrift ermöglichten. Kürzlich ging er einem Stellenangebot an die Yale UniversityNew Haven an das Department of Internal Medicine (Li Wennach) nach. Kurt Dittmar wird eine ausgiebige Bewertung der Leistungen und der Persönlichkeit von Bin Ma präsentieren.
Kathrin Westphal (Preisträgerin 2007; Betreuer Siegfried Weiß)
Gängige Behandlungsmethoden für Krebs, wie die Chemo- oder Strahlentherapie, zerstören nicht nur Krebszellen, sondern auch andere teilungsaktive Zellen wie jene des Immunsystems. Dadurch kann der Patient extrem geschädigt werden. Die Entwicklung von neuen, spezifischer wirkenden Ansätzen ist deshalb ein Gebot, das derzeit mit unterschiedlichen experimentellen Systemen angegangen wird.
Krankheitserregende Bakterien als Helfer im Kampf gegen den Krebs – das klingt abenteuerlich, doch weiß man seit über hundert Jahren, dass Bazillen Krebsgeschwüre bevorzugt besiedeln. Dazu mögen die sauerstoffarme Bedingungen beitragen, unter denen viele Bakterien bevorzugt wachsen. Jüngste Ergebnisse in der Arbeitsgruppe von Siegfried Weiß nähren die Hoffnung, dass daraus ein neuer Ansatz für die Tumortherapie werden könnte.
Kathrin Westphal hat in ihrer Doktorarbeit die Grundlagen eines solchen Ansatzes an drei verschiedenen Bakterienstämmen untersucht. Daraus ergaben. Aus der Idee einer Bakterien-vermittelten DNA Übertragung wurde dabei ein neues, großartiges Projekt, dessen Erfolg nach vielen zu überwindenden Hürden inzwischen absehbar ist. Durch Elektronenmikroskopie konnte die Auszuzeichnende zeigen, dass sich die Bakterien außerhalb der Zellen, und zwar in Form eines Biofilms ansiedeln. Dieser Befund eröffnet neue Therapieformen, zeigt er doch, dass diese Bakterien im Tumor Eigenschaften besitzen, die sie in keinem anderen Wirtsgewebe haben. Damit wird es möglich Tumor-spezifische Gene zu charakterisieren, und deren Promotoren für eine Tumor-spezifische Genexpression in Bakterien zu verwenden.
Mit ihren Ergebnissen hat Kathrin Westphal in ihrer Doktorarbeit wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse von herausragender Bedeutung generiert. Zum einen, hat sie neue Erkenntnisse zur Tumorbesiedelung von festen Tumoren durch Bakterien beigesteuert und zum anderen die Möglichkeiten einer noch spezifischeren Therapie von Krebs mit Hilfe von Bakterien aufgezeigt.
