Rolf Horstmann "Human genetic studies on tuberculosis and malaria"
"Genetic epidemiology makes use of the more than 15 Mio polymorphisms in the human genome to relate differences in disease manifestation to distinct genetic variants and their functional impacts. In Ghana, West Africa, we studied over 10,000 adults and young children highly exposed to tuberculosis and malaria, respectively. Using candidate gene studies we verified, refined or questioned previous experimental data. In addition, we successfully applied genome-wide association approaches to identify novel human genetic factors affecting the courses of infection."
