At the main location in Braunschweig you find the laboratories and technical devices for 4 of the 5 research topics of the HZI. The 5^th topic – pharmaceutical research – is mainly located at the HIPS in Saarbrücken/Saarland.

Furthermore, the offices of the Centre management, the administrative departments and administrative units are placed in Braunschweig.

Besides the HZI, the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Culture (Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen, DSMZ) as well as the pharmaceutical biotechnological laboratories of the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM) are situated.
